AIF® Certification Requirements: Experience, Training, and Eligibility

AIF® Certification Requirements: Experience, Training, and Eligibility

The Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®) credential is not accessible to everyone—Fi360 maintains specific eligibility requirements to ensure that professionals earning the designation have the experience and foundational knowledge to act as true fiduciaries. This guide breaks down every requirement you must meet before you can sit for the exam, the training you must complete, the costs involved, and the annual obligations to maintain your credential.

Eligibility Pathways: Two Routes to the AIF®

Fi360 offers two distinct pathways to AIF® eligibility, recognizing that professionals develop expertise through different combinations of formal credentials and work experience. You must qualify through one of these two paths; you cannot substitute other credentials or experience.

Path 1: 5 Years of Relevant Experience + Qualifying Credential

If you have exactly 5 years of relevant professional experience in financial services or investment management, you must also hold one of these qualifying credentials:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (any field)
  • Professional certification such as Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or similar professional designation
  • Active financial services license such as a Series 7, Series 65, or similar regulatory license

If you have a bachelor's degree, your 5 years of experience can include time in any role where you had responsibility for financial decision-making or investment advising. This might include financial advisor positions, investment consultant roles, pension plan administration, trust advising, or similar work.

Path 2: 8 Years of Relevant Experience (No Credential Required)

Alternatively, you can qualify with 8 years of relevant professional experience alone, without needing any additional degree or certification. This pathway acknowledges that professionals with extended experience in fiduciary roles have developed deep practical knowledge equivalent to those with formal credentials.

Your 8 years of experience must be in roles with direct responsibility for investment decisions or fiduciary duties. The broader standard here gives experienced professionals flexibility if they haven't pursued advanced credentials.

What Counts as Relevant Professional Experience

When you apply for the AIF®, you'll need to document your experience and demonstrate that it qualifies. Fi360 accepts experience in these categories:

  • Financial advisory (investment advice to individuals or institutions)
  • Investment consulting (advising on asset allocation, manager selection, performance)
  • Portfolio management (managing client assets directly)
  • Pension or retirement plan administration
  • Trust advising and fiduciary services
  • Endowment or foundation management
  • Institutional asset management
  • Compliance or risk management related to fiduciary responsibilities

Experience in sales-only roles (where you're not making fiduciary decisions) may not count fully toward your requirement. If you're unsure whether your specific work history qualifies, contact Fi360 directly before applying. It's better to clarify upfront than to have your application rejected.

Required Training: 20 Hours of Structured Education

Regardless of which experience pathway you follow, you must complete approximately 20 hours of structured training covering the Prudent Practices® Framework, fiduciary principles, and related topics. This training is not optional and must be completed before you can sit for the exam.

Four Training Format Options

Fi360 offers training in four distinct formats to accommodate different learning styles and schedules:

1. Online Self-Study

Complete the curriculum entirely online at your own pace using video modules, reading materials, and interactive exercises. This format offers maximum flexibility—you can study whenever and wherever convenient. No instructor interaction or scheduled sessions.

Cost: Typically $1,595–$1,750

Duration: 3-6 weeks depending on how much time you allocate weekly

Best for: Busy professionals with unpredictable schedules or those who prefer independent learning

2. Live Virtual Training

Attend instructor-led sessions via webinar or virtual meeting platform (Zoom, Teams, or similar). These are typically conducted over 2-3 days with multiple sessions per day. You interact with the instructor in real-time, can ask questions, and receive immediate feedback.

Cost: Typically $1,750–$1,895

Duration: Concentrated over 2-4 days, or spread over several weeks with shorter sessions

Best for: Professionals who benefit from instructor interaction and real-time Q&A

3. In-Person Training

Classroom-based instruction at a physical location, typically conducted over 2-3 consecutive days. You have direct access to the instructor, can network with other professionals pursuing the AIF®, and have the most personalized learning experience.

Cost: Typically $1,895–$1,950

Duration: Usually 2-3 consecutive days plus one evening session

Best for: Professionals who learn best in classroom settings and value in-person networking

4. Blended Learning

A combination of online modules and live sessions (either virtual or in-person). You complete some content independently online, then attend live sessions for discussion, application exercises, and Q&A. This balances flexibility with instructor interaction.

Cost: Typically $1,700–$1,895

Duration: 4-6 weeks with multiple live sessions

Best for: Professionals wanting flexibility with some structured instructor guidance

Training Content and What You'll Learn

Your required training covers the following topic areas, all centered around the Prudent Practices® Framework:

  • Introduction to fiduciary responsibility and the fiduciary standard
  • ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974) requirements and implications
  • The four domains: Organize, Formalize, Implement, and Monitor
  • Investment policy statement development and components
  • Due diligence processes for selecting advisors and investments
  • Performance monitoring and evaluation methodologies
  • Documentation requirements and compliance
  • Governance structures and roles
  • Risk management and conflict of interest management
  • Regulatory landscape and evolving standards

Training providers are required to cover these topics, but each provider may structure and emphasize the content differently. All approved training meets Fi360's curriculum requirements, so you can choose based on format and cost rather than content differences.

Costs: Training Investment and Annual Fees

One-Time Training Cost: $1,595–$1,950

Your training investment depends on which format you choose. Online self-study is the most economical option, while in-person training is the most expensive due to venue and instructor costs. Consider both the upfront cost and the value you place on instructor interaction and flexibility.

Some employers cover AIF® training costs for employees pursuing the credential as a professional development investment. If this applies to you, clarify this with your employer before enrolling.

Exam Fee

In addition to training, you'll pay a separate exam fee to Fi360 to sit for the 80-question test. The exam fee is typically $150–$200 but verify the current fee when you register for your exam appointment.

Annual Renewal Dues: $375/Year

Once you earn the AIF® credential, you must pay annual renewal dues to maintain it. As of July 2025, these dues are $375 per year, increased from the previous $325. This annual fee covers credential maintenance, CE administration, and access to member resources.

Budget $375 annually into your professional development costs. If you let your dues lapse, your credential becomes inactive, though you can typically reactivate it by paying back dues and demonstrating current CE completion.

Continuing Education Requirements for Credential Maintenance

Simply passing the exam and paying annual dues is not sufficient. You must complete continuing education to keep your AIF® credential active and current.

Annual CE Requirement: 6 Hours

Each year, you must complete 6 hours of continuing education in fiduciary-related topics. Of these 6 hours:

  • At least 4 hours must be in courses or programs accepted by Fi360 specifically
  • The remaining 2 hours can come from other approved sources (such as industry conferences, webinars, or professional development programs)

The 4 hours of Fi360-accepted CE often come from Fi360's own courses, conference sessions sponsored by Fi360, or approved vendor programs. The remaining 2 hours provide flexibility to incorporate learning from your firm's internal training, industry conferences, or other professional development.

CE Topic Areas

Your continuing education must be relevant to fiduciary responsibility, investment management, or related compliance and governance topics. Acceptable topics include:

  • Advances in fiduciary law and regulation
  • Investment management best practices
  • Governance and organizational leadership
  • Compliance and risk management in fiduciary roles
  • Performance measurement and benchmarking
  • Emerging issues in wealth management or retirement planning

General financial topics (tax planning, estate planning, etc.) typically do not count toward your AIF® CE requirement. Focus on fiduciary-specific content to ensure your courses qualify.

CE Tracking and Compliance

You're responsible for tracking your CE completion and submitting proof to Fi360 when renewing your credential. Maintain certificates of completion or attendance documentation for any courses you complete. If you fall short of the 6-hour requirement, you'll be notified and given a grace period to complete the requirement.

Application Process and Timing

Once you've completed your required training, you'll submit an application to Fi360 documenting your experience, education, and training completion. The application process typically takes 1-2 weeks for approval.

After approval, you can schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE testing center. Testing centers are available in most locations and times, and you can typically schedule your exam within days of your application being approved.

The Complete Financial Picture

When budgeting for your AIF® credential, account for these expenses:

  • Training: $1,595–$1,950 (one-time)
  • Exam fee: $150–$200 (one-time)
  • Annual renewal dues: $375/year (ongoing)
  • Annual CE: $0–$500 depending on whether you access free resources or paid courses

Total first-year cost: approximately $2,120–$2,650. Subsequent years: $375–$875 annually depending on CE options you choose.

For many advisors, this represents a reasonable investment in credential-building and professional development. Some firms offset these costs or provide tuition reimbursement, so explore whether your employer offers support.

Final Eligibility Check

Before you enroll in training and invest time and money, verify that you meet one of the two experience pathways. Contact Fi360 directly if you're uncertain whether your background qualifies. It's far better to confirm eligibility upfront than to invest in training and discover later that your experience doesn't meet the requirements.
